Summer has finally arrived and brings with it specific road safety challenges.
With the better weather, more vulnerable road users - walkers, cyclists, horse riders and motorcyclists will be out and about. So drivers, always take a second look for a motorcyclist, or cyclist, especially when emerging from a junction. When overtaking a person cycling, allow at least a car’s width. Now it’s the school holidays, more children will be out cycling and playing. Children can be unpredictable, so slow down, and give them space.
Some of us will be doing some work around the house or garden and might need to tow a trailer. Do you know the rules for towing?
There’ll be more people out for a drive in the country and to the tourist spots, but remember the dangers of rural roads. It’s also a busy time for farmers, so be prepared to encounter slow moving farm vehicles, animals or mud on the road surface. Slow down when entering town or villages and expect the unexpected.
Drivers - the large majority of road traffic collisions can be avoided, if we as road users took better care and made better decisions when using the roads, so pay attention.
Many of us will be driving for longer distances that usual. Make sure you carry out vehicle checks before setting off.
Remember Highway Code Rule 237, when driving in hot weather:
- Keep your vehicle well ventilated to avoid drowsiness.
- Be aware that the road surface may become soft - these conditions could affect your steering and braking.
- If you are dazzled by bright sunlight, slow down and if necessary stop.
