Control Or Speed

Control Or Speed

Excessive speed for the road or the conditions remains a major cause of road deaths and serious injuries in Northern Ireland, especially on rural roads with higher speed limits.

Despite the risks, many drivers believe they can stay in control while driving at an inappropriate speed. However, evidence shows that when traveling at higher speeds our reaction times are reduced, stopping distances increase making it more difficult to respond safely to unexpected hazards. In any collision, speed increases the likelihood of serious outcomes and your ability to control the consequences is lost.

Data shows that 95% of collisions are linked to human error, and rural roads account for over half of all fatalities and serious injuries. This new anti-speeding campaign, 'Control or Speed' aims to challenge speeding behaviour on our roads and focuses on the fact that higher speed reduces control. Slowing down improves your ability to react, stop, and avoid danger.

The more you speed, the less you control.

The more you speed, the longer your stopping distance.

The more you speed, the less time you have to react.

The more you speed, the greater the impact.

Regardless of the driving conditions, you’ll always lose control to speed.
